Our policy to access bulk-billing psychologists

At My Mirror we know how important it is to get access to mental health support, when and where you need it most. My Mirror is a mixed billing service offering medicare gap sessions, private fee sessions and bulk-billing via application.

Our team of skilled psychologists is proud to offer bulk-billing services to our clients, ensuring that you can get the support you need without worrying about out-of-pocket costs. Our psychologists allocate a portion of sessions bulk-billed and our team reviews on a case-by-case basis against a few financial hardship criteria.

What are the criteria considered to access bulk-billing psychologists?

Bulk billing psychologists for people living in rural areas

Our bulk-billing application forms ask a few questions that help us understand your situation and assess needs on a case-by-case basis. As our psychologists provide only an allocation of sessions bulk-billed this process ensures fair access. Some of the factors we consider:

  • Residential location (rural & remote access)
  • Financial hardship
  • Employment status
  • Whether you hold a healthcare concession card
  • Whether you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • Must have a valid referral & Mental Health Plan (talk to your GP or request an online consultation to obtain one)

How does the bulk-billing process work?

Does having a Mental Health Plan mean I will be automatically bulk-billed with no charge to me?

Your referral and Mental Health Plan reduces your out-of-pocket costs, and means that you will not be fully bulk-billed with our services. Our fee is charged in full after the completion of your session. Your claim will be made to Medicare after your session, and should you be eligible, the rebate will be applied to your account.

At My Mirror, we know how important it is to get access to mental health support, when and where you need it most. That’s why we provide bulk-billed sessions to those with a valid MHCP referral and Medicare card living in Australia that meets certain criteria. Should you like to be considered for bulk billing, please make an application.

Your application will be assessed within 1-3 business days and your outcome will be sent via email to you. Please wait for this outcome prior to booking a session, any sessions booked prior to the outcome being released will not be bulk-billed even if you are approved

Please be aware that we are not predominantly a bulk-billing clinic, and an application does not guarantee bulk-billed sessions.

I have applied for bulk-billing, what are the next steps?

Please wait for the approval confirmation email prior to booking a session, any sessions booked prior to the outcome being released will not be bulk-billed even if you are approved.

What criteria do you assess the bulk-billing application on?

We place a big importance on making mental health services accessible to all. Our application forms ask a few questions that help us understand your situation and asses you on a case-by-case basis. Some of the factors we consider are your residential location, whether you are experiencing financial hardship and your employment status, and whether you hold a healthcare concession card.

Please be aware that to be eligible, it is essential that you hold a referral and Mental Health Plan (aka MHCP or MHTP) from your GP. Should you not have attained this, please make an appointment with your GP to ask for one.

Without these documents, regardless of whether your situation is approved, we are unable to provide bulk-billed sessions.

What happens if I cancel a bulk-billed session after the notice period? Will it still be covered by Medicare?

We ask that you please provide as much notice as possible if you do need to cancel your session to avoid any cancellation fees, as these are not bulk billed. Medicare does not cover any unattended sessions and therefore will not accept a claim for any cancelled or no-shows.

As per our cancellation policy, cancellations made with less than 48hr notice will incur a 50% session fee and cancellations with less than 24hrs notice, a 75% charge. If you do not show to your session you will be charged the full fee of the appointment.

This cancellation fee will automatically be charged to your account either when you cancel the appointment if you fall within the cancellation window, or at the end of your allocated session time if you failed to show up to an appointment.

Please see our terms for more detail.

Can I book a session under bulk billing as soon as I am approved?

As soon as you are approved, you will receive an email from our team advising you of your outcome and how to proceed with booking an appointment.

We will be issuing you a discount code to your profile that is automatically allocated to your payment page when booking in with a bulk-billing available psychologist. This means that should you be eligible for bulk billing, you will be able to book a session as soon as you receive your approval.

Please be aware that not all of our psychologists are available for bulk-billed appointments. As we are not a predominantly bulk-billing clinic, we will have a limited number of psychologists taking bulk-billing appointments at any one time. The team will inform you who is available for bulk billing at the time of approval. Please note that this can change week to week, and is best to book in as soon as possible once approved to secure your preferred bulk-billing psychologist.

Why have I only received 6 bulk billed sessions?

Your bulk-billed sessions work in collaboration with your Mental Health Plan. You are entitled to 10 sessions per year under the Medicare scheme and they are allocated to you in blocks of 6 and 4. We would allocate your bulk-billing discount code based on the number of sessions you have on your MHCP and in conjunction with the sessions you have indicated that you have had previously elsewhere. In most cases, when you initially get a Mental Heath Plan from your GP, you will be entitled to 6 sessions. This is why you have only received 6 bulk-billing session codes to your profile.

Following the completion of your initial 6 sessions, your psychologist may recommend that you see your GP to receive a new referral, allowing you access to an additional 4 rebated sessions. Email our Customer Success team to receive the next steps and gain access to the remaining 4 sessions.

I've completed my 10 claimable sessions per year, how do I get more bulk-billed sessions?

Your bulk-billed sessions work in collaboration with your Mental Health Plan. You are entitled to up to 10 sessions per year under the Medicare scheme and they are allocated to you in blocks of an initial 6 and the remaining 4 by your GP.

I have finished the first set of 6 sessions:

Following the completion of your initial 6 sessions, your psychologist may recommend that you see your GP to receive a new referral, allowing you access to an additional 4 rebated sessions. Please upload your new referral to your profile and email our Customer Success team to receive the next steps.

I have finished the first set of 10 sessions (set of 4 after the initial 6):

You are eligible for up to 10 sessions with medicare rebates each calendar if. If you have completed all 10 sessions you will need to wait for the new calendar year for the next allocation of 10 sessions. At this stage, you will need to reapply for Bulk Billing.

As we are not exclusively a bulk-billed service our psychologists are only able to provide a small number of bulk-billed sessions. In turn, this is assessed on a case-by-case basis and thus, the outcome of your application cannot be guaranteed for subsequent referrals.

What clients say about My Mirror

06 April 2023

So grateful

I am so grateful for my psychologist from My Mirror, and having my psychologist available via telehealth has been so much more beneficial for my mental health. Being able to be seen, heard and listened to rather than waiting so long on a waitlist has been a godsend.

Fantastic experience

Having been initially sceptical, my overall experience with My Mirror has been fantastic. My Mirror matched and connected me with a psychologist who simply “got” me from the very beginning. I cannot recommend this service enough.

Big tick

I'm one of those people who doesn't enjoy going out of my home or talking to a doctor, let alone a psychologist. Without My Mirror and the services they provide I would most likely neglect seeking help, so it's a big tick from me for these guys.

What we need

One of the best online platforms I have ever used. The simplicity of the bulk billing system, rebates and the selection of well educated clinical psychologists is what we need. Couldn't of found a better website. 🙌
