Psychologist
Working as a psychologist has allowed me to meet and work with clients from a range of different contexts and I feel honoured to hear each person's individual story and experience. I approach my work as I approach life in general; with inquisitiveness, motivation, positive energy and humour.
I'm a Forensic Psychologist with experience working with a range of client groups across different roles and settings. I have worked in the criminal justice system with adolescents and adults, as well as in health settings supporting parents, carers and young people with challenging or problematic behaviours. I enjoy watching the growth and change that can occur during treatment and encourage families to work collaboratively to achieve this.
I am compassionate, kind, non-judgemental and bring a sense of humour and a bit of fun to my work. I spend time with my clients sharing interests and building a strong therapeutic relationship so they feel at ease with talking about the challenges they might be facing.
From the first meeting, I try to explore as much as I can about a client's history, significant experiences, current issues and goals for counselling. From there, I will collaboratively create a treatment plan that is tailored to the individual needs and wants of the client and assist them in developing insight and understanding into their issues and/or symptoms.
A little more about me... I'm originally from England however, have lived in Australia for over 15 years mostly in Queensland and NSW. I like to share my experiences of living and working in the outback in Northern QLD, chasing cows and riding horses and motorbikes.
My approach is mainly based in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, however, I do also utilise aspects of both Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. In addition, where required, I will utilise Motivational Interviewing to encourage talk around change and use strategies and theory from Family Systems Therapy to help meet the needs of my clients.
One size doesn't always fit all, so it is important to assess what you need and what has previously worked (or not worked) and try to use strategies that work well for the best outcome.
