Learn how bulk billing works and where to find an online, bulk-billed psychologist in Australia.

What Is Bulk Billing?
Bulk billing is when your online psychology session is directly covered by Medicare, so eligible clients pay nothing out-of-pocket. Bulk-billed services are there to make Mental Health support accessible for more Australians, by removing cost barriers to care.

Does having a Mental Health Plan mean I will be automatically bulk-billed with no charge to me?
No – having a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and GP referral is required to claim Medicare rebates, but it doesn’t automatically mean your sessions will be bulk billed. To access bulk billed psychologist appointments with My Mirror, you need to meet our specific eligibility criteria and complete a separate bulk billing application.
With a valid MHCP and referral, you’ll still benefit from reduced out-of-pocket costs through Medicare rebates, even if you’re not eligible for bulk billing. Our fee is charged in full after your session, and your Medicare rebate (if applicable) will then be processed back to you.
If you’d like to be considered for bulk billing, please submit an application before booking. We’ll review your request within 2–3 business days and email you with the outcome. Please wait for confirmation before booking, as sessions scheduled prior to approval cannot be bulk billed, even if your application is later accepted.
Please note that My Mirror is not a fully bulk billing clinic, and approval is not guaranteed. Our bulk billing places are prioritised for concession card holders, people experiencing financial hardship, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and others with particular needs.
I have applied for bulk-billing, what are the next steps?
Your application will be assessed by our team within 2-3 business days and your outcome will be sent via email to you. Please wait for the approval confirmation email prior to booking a session, any sessions booked prior to the outcome being released will not be bulk-billed even if you are approved.
This email will detail the next steps you for you to take depending on the outcome you have received. Please contact us if you have not heard after 5 business days.
Can I get my Mental Health Plan bulk billed?
You can get your Mental Health Plan bulk billed by requesting an online appointment. Talk to an online GP from the comfort of your own home and receive your Mental Health Plan and referral letter just like you would in a face-to-face appointment.
Online Mental Health Plan assessments are bulk billed, meaning you won't have any out-of-pocket expenses.
What criteria do you assess the bulk-billing application on?
We place a big importance on making mental health services accessible to all. Our application forms ask a few questions that help us understand your situation and asses you on a case-by-case basis. Some of the factors we consider are your residential location, whether you are experiencing financial hardship and your employment status, and whether you hold a healthcare concession card.
Please be aware that to be eligible, it is essential that you hold a referral and Mental Health Plan (aka MHCP or MHTP) from your GP. Should you not have attained this, please make an appointment with your GP to ask for one.
Without these documents, regardless of whether your situation is approved, we are unable to provide bulk-billed sessions.
What happens if I cancel a bulk-billed session after the notice period? Will it still be covered by Medicare?
We ask that you please provide as much notice as possible if you do need to cancel your session to avoid any cancellation fees, as these are not bulk billed. Medicare does not cover any unattended sessions and therefore will not accept a claim for any cancelled or no-shows.
As per our cancellation policy, cancellations made with less than 48hr notice will incur a 50% session fee and cancellations with less than 24hrs notice, a 75% charge. If you do not show to your session you will be charged the full fee of the appointment.
This cancellation fee will automatically be charged to your account either when you cancel the appointment if you fall within the cancellation window, or at the end of your allocated session time if you failed to show up to an appointment.
Please see our terms for more detail.
Can I book a session under bulk billing as soon as I am approved?
As soon as you are approved, you will receive an email from our team advising you of your outcome and how to proceed with booking an appointment.
We will be issuing you a discount code to your profile that is automatically allocated to your payment page when booking in with a bulk-billing available psychologist. This means that should you be eligible for bulk billing, you will be able to book a session as soon as you receive your approval.
Please be aware that not all of our psychologists are available for bulk-billed appointments. As we are not a predominantly bulk-billing clinic, we will have a limited number of psychologists taking bulk-billing appointments at any one time. The team will inform you who is available for bulk billing at the time of approval. Please note that this can change week to week, and is best to book in as soon as possible once approved to secure your preferred bulk-billing psychologist.
Why have I only received 6 bulk billed sessions?
Your bulk-billed sessions work in collaboration with your Mental Health Plan. You are entitled to 10 sessions per year under the Medicare scheme and they are allocated to you in blocks of 6 and 4. We would allocate your bulk-billing discount code based on the number of sessions you have on your MHCP and in conjunction with the sessions you have indicated that you have had previously elsewhere. In most cases, when you initially get a Mental Heath Plan from your GP, you will be entitled to 6 sessions. This is why you have only received 6 bulk-billing session codes to your profile.
Following the completion of your initial 6 sessions, your psychologist may recommend that you see your GP to receive a new referral, allowing you access to an additional 4 rebated sessions. Email our Customer Success team to receive the next steps and gain access to the remaining 4 sessions.
I've completed my 10 claimable sessions per year, how do I get more bulk-billed sessions?
Your bulk-billed sessions work in collaboration with your Mental Health Plan. You are entitled to up to 10 sessions per year under the Medicare scheme and they are allocated to you in blocks of an initial 6 and the remaining 4 by your GP.
I have finished the first set of 6 sessions:
Following the completion of your initial 6 sessions, your psychologist may recommend that you see your GP to receive a new referral, allowing you access to an additional 4 rebated sessions. Please upload your new referral to your profile and email our Customer Success team to receive the next steps.
I have finished the first set of 10 sessions (set of 4 after the initial 6):
You are eligible for up to 10 sessions with medicare rebates each calendar if. If you have completed all 10 sessions you will need to wait for the new calendar year for the next allocation of 10 sessions. At this stage, you will need to reapply for Bulk Billing.
As we are not exclusively a bulk-billed service our psychologists are only able to provide a small number of bulk-billed sessions. In turn, this is assessed on a case-by-case basis and thus, the outcome of your application cannot be guaranteed for subsequent referrals.
Do all Psychologists Bulk Bill?
No, not all psychologists in Australia bulk bill. Each psychologist decides whether to offer bulk billing, based on their own policies.
