Hi, I'm Matthew

Hi, it is great to be here and to use technology to reach people all over Australia at times that suit them. I am an early riser, so I have some really early sessions if that is something that works for you. I take your problem seriously but that does not stop us from having some enjoyment working it through. Saturday morning appointments now available.

I think life is good but that does not mean that it is always easy or pleasant. I've needed help in my life and I am grateful to have had it. I am so content as a psychologist, as it gives me the opportunity to use kindness, relationship building as well as science to help clients. I recognise that I make mistakes and that these can mostly be repaired and mostly provide an opportunity for growth and at times an even deeper relationship.

I've been married 26 years and have three adult children. We enjoy catching up at the end of the day and having a laugh. Parenting was made a little more challenging having twins with disabilities and it also made the achievements feel so much more thrilling.

I adore music and play multiple styles of guitar, with my newest venture being playing with my African brothers and sisters in an African Gospel format. Creativity takes many forms and my newest fad is using a Kamado style bbq to smoke a variety of foods with some really pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant results. I started gardening when I was a kid and really haven't stopped as I still get a thrill from putting a seed in the ground and having food a few weeks later.

I grew up in Indonesia and it taught me how much I have to be thankful for. I have experienced some tragedies and traumas there as well as here in Australia. And that is not the end of the story. On the other side there has been help and even opportunities to thrive and find joy. I know it is not that way for everyone and I hope that my work makes it true for more.

By nature, I have always been curious, which lead to me embarking on a medical science career. I changed career to become a psychologist and now I use both fields of study to consider the whole person and what might be helpful to them.

I hope to travel around Australia when I reach retirement but my idea of a break now is surfing on a South Coast beach in winter, on my own and camping with the family in the bush. One great wave, one peak experience, some time in nature and I feel ready to work again.

My Approach

Kind. My approach depends on the client, the strength of the relationship, the problem being addressed and where we are up to in therapy. Sometimes this means lots of listening, kindness and empathy and at other times there may be more encouragement to do things and try things. My job is not to make people happy but to help them change. This can be challenging so I believe in checking in on what is helping the client and doing what works for them at their pace.

I am trained in Behaviour, Cognitive Behavioural, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Positive Psychology.
