Hi, I'm Philip

Therapy doesn’t have to feel formal or clinical. I aim to offer a space where you can talk openly, make sense of what’s been happening, and feel genuinely heard. We’ll take the time to understand what’s going on for you before figuring out together what might actually help.

Hi, I’m Philip, a Melbourne-based psychologist. I’m originally from South Africa and lived and worked for several years in beautiful Aotearoa (New Zealand) before recently making Australia home. Having started over in a new country more than once, I know something of what it’s like to leave familiar people and places behind, find your feet again, and sometimes feel a little lost in the process. It’s also given me a very human appreciation for change, uncertainty, grief and the complicated mix of feelings that can come with moving forward in life.

People often come to therapy knowing that something isn’t quite right, but not necessarily knowing what to call it or where to start. You might be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, burnt out or low. You may be dealing with grief, a difficult relationship or a big change in your life. Sometimes it’s simply a sense that you’ve been carrying too much for too long.

I’m a psychologist and work with adults experiencing a range of emotional and life difficulties. I have a particular interest in anxiety, grief and loss, burnout, low mood, self-esteem, relationship difficulties and major life transitions.

I also know that therapy can feel uncomfortable at first, espeically if you’ve had an experience of therapy that felt overly clinical, rushed, or focused on techniques before you felt properly understood.

For me, good therapy starts with understanding the person rather than trying to fit them into a particular model. I’m interested in what has happened in your life, how you’ve learned to cope, what keeps getting in the way, and what you would genuinely like to be different.

You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on, and you certainly don’t need to have the right words for it. We can work that out together.

My Approach

My approach is warm, conversational and down to earth. I like to understand what’s going on for you and what you need from therapy, rather than assuming the same approach will work for everyone. I draw on approaches including CBT, ACT, DBT and EMDR, depending on what we’re working with. Sometimes we’ll slow things down and make sense of what’s underneath a pattern; other times you may be ready to get straight into working on it and finding some relief. I’m comfortable with both, and we can work out together what makes sense for you.
