How can online therapy help with stress management?

Most of us lead stressful lives. However, if stress is prolonged and severe it can contribute to both physical and psychological health problems and is a risk factor for clinical disorders such as anxiety and depression. It is not possible or even helpful to remove all stress from life, but we can learn ways to reframe how we interpret stressful events and develop helpful strategies to manage unavoidable triggers.

My Mirror psychologists offer a range of online evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, personalised to your specific needs and circumstances.

Online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) works on both the behaviours and thoughts that may be contributing to your stress reactions. The approach initially encourages you to adapt and schedule behaviours to prevent unnecessary stress, calm down the nervous system and introduce more activities that you find recharging into your daily life. The practice then focuses on becoming aware and subsequently challenging the thought patterns that may be maintaining your state of chronic stress.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) similarly works on the thoughts and behaviours associated with stress. However, rather than challenging your thoughts and feelings, ACT teaches techniques to accept the emotions and things outside of your control in reaction to a stressful event and focus on the things within your control making values-oriented changes and decisions. Your clinician will work with you to develop goals and associated behavioural changes to live in line with those values.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) builds upon the structure of CBT while incorporating mindfulness meditation as the primary therapeutic technique. Rather than challenging your thoughts, MCBT encourages a changed relationship to your thoughts and emotions as being fleeting and separate from the self so that these experiences result in less distress and impact in our daily life.

What to expect from an online session with a psychologist for stress management?

Woman using online therapy for anxiety

Your first session with a psychologist will largely focus on the presenting problem (or the main set of stressors you are seeking help to manage) and general questions about your work, living situation, health, family, friends, and romantic relationships.

Psychologists are trained to be non-judgmental and all sessions are confidential. In order to get the most out of sessions, it’s important to be as open and honest as possible so your psychologist can gain a real understanding of your situation and how they can most effectively help. Following the first session, your psychologist will tailor a course of evidence-based therapy specific to your needs and circumstances. Most people find they have reduced stress levels and reduced feelings of depression and anxiety following a short course of treatment.
