Hi, I'm Van
Most of what shapes us happens in relationship — with ourselves, with our bodies, and with the people, places and systems around us. When those relationships are strained, life gets heavier than it needs to be. I work with people ready to understand those patterns and build a life that feels genuinely their own.
To be seen without conditions — no role to hold, nothing to manage for anyone else — is rarer than it should be. It's also where most change starts.
I work with individuals, couples and families across the lifespan, in community, health, disability, justice, workplace and child protection settings. That includes people navigating trauma, transition, disability, mental health challenges, relational wounds, and systems that don't always make space for them. I've worked with people from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds, including First Nations young people in remote communities.
I began in suicide prevention as a volunteer, later worked in the field professionally, and supporting people through self-harm and suicidal ideation remains a core part of my practice.
Before psychology I worked across law, regulation, public policy, technology, design and innovation — on boards, in startups, and inside the systems that shape people's lives. Much of that work was about change: organisational and cultural transformation, industry reform, regulatory change. I designed and implemented it, and helped leaders, teams and whole workforces prepare for it and grow through it. What it taught me is how hard change is at every scale — not because people are resistant, but because change asks us to give up something that works for something we can't yet see.
My own experience of displacement, cultural and intergenerational tension, and questions of identity and belonging informs this work too.
Hardship is unavoidable. But I've watched people turn it into ground from which something new grows.
My Approach
I work with how you treat yourself, how you inhabit your body, what you've learned to tolerate, and what you've stopped expecting — often the patterns that exhaust us were once the things that kept us safe.
My approach is strengths-based, trauma-responsive, neuroaffirming and culturally curious. I draw on CBT, ACT, EMDR, IFS, Emotion-Focused Therapy, DBT, Schema, Narrative, Solution-Focused and Psychodynamic therapies, alongside mindfulness and positive psychology — tailored to you and your situation rather than to a manual. I'm particularly interested in deepening connection, healing relational wounds, and interrupting intergenerational patterns.
