Online therapy in Australia: How to get started?
Let's walk you through the simple steps of how to get started with online therapy

Your three steps to start online therapy
Online therapy with My Mirror connects you with an AHPRA‑registered psychologist via secure video sessions from anywhere in Australia. Below are three simple steps to get started - from creating your account and getting matched to uploading your Medicare details and booking your first session.
1. Get matched with an online therapist

Online therapy starts with finding the right psychologist for your needs and schedule.
We recommend using our matching tool as it's the simplest way to find a therapist. However, if you want to be more specific in your search, you can also browse our online psychologist's profiles and use our filters to refine your search.
Once you've picked your psychologist, you can check their availability and book your online therapy session.
2. Upload your Medicare documents (when eligible)

To be eligible for Medicare rebates, you’ll need a valid Medicare card and a referral letter, as well as a Mental Health Plan from your GP.
To claim your rebates, upload your Medicare documents to your account via the Medicare tab of your dashboard before your first session occurs.
Once your session is completed, you can submit your claim to Medicare.
3. Join your online therapy session

My Mirror makes using online therapy as easy as possible. When it’s time for your session, simply log in to your My Mirror account from your phone, tablet or laptop. We recommend using a laptop, as many people find it more comfortable for therapy sessions.
You can choose to turn your camera off and have an audio‑only call, and you can send messages to your psychologist during the session using the chat function.
You stay in control of how your sessions run and when you schedule them.
Looking for online counselling instead?

Not quite ready for online therapy yet?

If you’re not quite ready to book a session but would like a clearer picture of how you’ve been feeling, you can start with a quick mental health check‑in. Our check‑in uses the DASS‑21 self‑assessment to help you reflect on symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress in a simple, confidential way.
Your results are for you, and you can choose to use them to guide your search for a psychologist or as something to work through in your first online therapy session.
Why choose online therapy with My Mirror
Is online therapy is right for me?
There’s no universal fit in therapy. If face-to-face sessions don’t feel right for you, then that’s ok. Therapy looks different for everyone, and the reasons you may choose online therapy can be far-reaching.
Online therapy is secure and convenient, with no waiting lists and Medicare rebates process for you. Whether you're living in a remote community, cannot travel to your psychologists' office, or simply want a therapy solution that works around your schedule, online therapy could be a great option for you.

Is online therapy effective?
Studies show that online therapy is just as effective as face-to-face therapy, helping hundreds of thousands of Australians access professional therapy services from their own home.
No two people are identical, and that’s why therapy should be personalised and adaptive. Online therapy allows you to do just this – personalised therapy sessions using evidence-based techniques.
Is online therapy safe & secure?
Confidential and discrete sessions are a vital part of therapy. All My Mirror psychologists are fully qualified and registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (or AHPRA for short). This means they are both ethically and legally bound to keep their sessions confidential, and gives clients peace of mind to talk openly.
All our online therapy sessions are end-to-end encrypted, so only you and your psychologist have access to the call. No third parties, including My Mirror itself, can access data from the call.
Online therapy works best when our clients know they’re in a safe space. That’s why we take our privacy and security policies seriously, creating the best possible environment for you and your online therapy sessions.
How do I know I’ve found the right psychologist?
You’ll know you’ve found a good psychologist match when you’re able to speak freely and open up in your therapy sessions. They should make you feel heard, have experience working in your area of concern, and most importantly help you to see improvements as your sessions progress over time.
What are the different types of therapy?
There are many different types of therapy, and your psychologist may assess which could be the right type for you based on your individual needs and goals. Some of the most common forms of therapy can include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
- Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
- Hypnotherapy
- Psychodynamic Therapy
- Motivational Interviewing
- Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy
Is online therapy covered by Medicare?
Yes, online therapy with a registered psychologist can be covered by Medicare if you have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP or psychiatrist, and your sessions meet Medicare’s telehealth criteria. In most cases you can claim a Medicare rebate for a set number of eligible sessions each calendar year, which reduces your out‑of‑pocket costs for online therapy
